BalenaEtcher requires Windows 7 (32 bit / 64 bit) or a newer version of the operating system. The installation is done quickly. After configuration, the program starts automatically, but it can also be called up at any time via the corresponding link on the desktop or in the start menu. You can then copy image files to the desired data medium with just a few clicks.
Three steps to a bootable USB drive
To “burn” a data media image to a drive connected with balenaEtcher, three simple steps are required: First, select the desired image file, which can be in IMG or ISO format or as a compressed ZIP file.
In the next step, select the USB stick, external hard drive or memory card. Hard drives permanently installed on the PC are hidden. This prevents you from accidentally selecting the wrong drive and deleting it during the copy process. In the event of a problem, however, you can deactivate this protection function in the program settings.
In the third step, you start the flash process. BalenaEtcher then checks the copied data for errors and issues a message if necessary. This way, you can be sure that the image was transferred to the disk without error.
You can also use the program settings to deactivate error reporting and to deactivate data carrier ejection and file monitoring after the copy process.
balenaEtcher alternatives and other versions
On the manufacturer’s website, balenaEtcher is also available for Linux and Mac OS. An edition of the portal can also be downloaded there. Rufus and WinSetupFromUSB, for example, are alternatives. With YUMI and Universal USB Installer, however, bootable USB drives can be configured with multiple operating systems at the same time. If you want to burn downloaded image files to a blank CD or DVD, you can do so with CDBurner XP or BurnAware.
