Identity card on Samsung S20: the test of the eID application begins in February 2021

There is new information on plans that German smartphone users can save their ID card digitally on the mobile phone. A request to the Bundestag shows that the first tests will take place from February 2021.

This comes from an article on Caschy’s blog. So far, after the announcement that Samsung is set to be the first partner in the project and wants to launch the digital ID card option for the Galaxy S20 series, very little has been heard. There is now more detailed information – however, potential interested parties will still need to be patient for the function.

Download of the application scheduled from June 2021

In response to a request to the Bundestag (PDF) he now says, among other things, about the project: “The Optimos funding project expires in November 2020. According to current planning, the prototype of a smartphone app is expected be launched on February 1, 2021, with a test login user account and access to the E-Government / Online Access Act (OZG) application in test mode. The application should be available for download from June 1, 2021 As a result, beta testing would begin in about five months and release would take place in June 2021. It is still unclear how far the project is currently.

According to our initial report on the Handy-Perso, Samsung had already confirmed in July this year that it would work on the implementation with the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the Federal Printing Office and Deutsche Telekom Security. At that time, however, it was said that the feature should be made available to all partners (including Samsung) this year as soon as the underlying mobile eID solution becomes available in Germany from the authorities. . Only then can you continue to plan – and it now appears to be.
