The Motorola RAZR 5G benefits from a further improved design, with which the manufacturers are trying to solve the problems of the first generation model. Nevertheless, the device looks extremely like a Moto RAZR from the early 2000s and therefore fits in with the famous design concept. The keyboard is replaced here by a foldable 6.2-inch OLED screen.
Interesting screen construction
The new display is a plastic OLED panel, which has a resolution of 2142 x 876 pixels and is therefore kept in a strongly stretched 21: 9 aspect ratio. If you fold the RAZR 5G together, the mobile hanging screen will slide into the frame a bit to avoid damage. At the same time, as with the first new RAZR model, it is “milled” in the fold area in order to make the radius of curvature as large as possible.
Motorola is now installing a larger display on the outside, which can also be used by touch and has a diagonal of 2.7 inches. This glass OLED panel has a comparatively high resolution of 800 x 600 pixels and can be used to operate some of the functions of the new RAZR 5G. The fingerprint reader of the new foldable smartphone is located on the lower half of the exterior.
The cameras offer a maximum of 48 megapixels
Motorola installs an indoor camera and an outdoor camera in the RAZR 5G. The sensor aimed at the user has a pleasantly sharp 20 megapixel resolution and with its f / 2.2 aperture should be sufficient for most self-portraits. What is more interesting anyway is the external camera, which is mounted directly under the second screen of the RAZR 5G. It offers 48 megapixel resolution, including pixel binning, and should capture plenty of light with an f / 1.7 aperture.
The RAZR 5G on
– and closed
Since the outside screen can show what the main camera sees, you can take high-quality self-portraits. While the technical specifications of the Motorola RAZR 5G’s cameras look very promising, it remains to be seen whether the manufacturer has actually made significant improvements over the previous model. This has often been criticized as the cameras could not do justice to the hefty price tag in any way.
The heart of the new foldable screen smartphone is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G Octacore SoC, which is mid-range but still has a directly integrated 5G modem. With clock frequencies of up to 2.3 gigahertz, the chip achieves quite sufficient performance for most users, which again last year was what was possible with today’s high-end SoCs. . Today, of course, it can’t compete with the Snapdragon 865+, which is used in Samsung’s latest foldable smartphones.
No expansion with SD card
The Snapdragon SoC with 5G modem is combined in the new Moto RAZR with eight gigabytes of RAM and an internal flash memory of 256 GB. Unfortunately, the latter cannot be expanded using a microSD card, because the second smartphone Motorola’s foldable is also extremely compact due to its form factor. There is only room for one NanoSIM slot and the device also offers eSIM support.
Motorola also needs to save on battery power due to the very limited space available in the RAZR 5G and has officially installed an energy storage device of just 2800mAh. It is powered by a USB Type-C connection and can be recharged relatively quickly via a 15-watt TurboPower power supply. The dimensions make it clear how compact the RAZR 5G is: when opened, the device is only 7.9 millimeters thick, which refers to the thinnest part. The characteristic “chin” at the lower end represents the thickest point and increases the overall height to 16 millimeters when closed.
The new Motorola RAZR 5G works with a version of Android 10 which has only been slightly modified by the manufacturer and will initially only be offered in black in Europe. According to Ober-Leaker Evan Blass, there will also be a version with a gold case in the US. In this country, the official price recommendation is again set at 1,499 euros at a high level, so customers have to consider whether they would rather invest in Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip 5G, which at a similar price offers more performance in a similar form factor. brings.
